For trade buyers, knowing how to order custom settings means translating a design intention into a component that can be cast, set, finished and repeated without compromising metal quality or stone security.

The strongest custom-setting orders begin well before a CAD file is issued. They account for the gemstone, the intended manufacturing method, the precious metal alloy, setting workflow and commercial volume. A setting that looks correct in a rendering may still be unsuitable if its claws are too fine for the stone, its seat is incorrectly proportioned, or its wall thickness creates avoidable casting risk.

Start with the stone, not the setting

A setting is engineered around the stone it must retain. Provide the exact stone type, calibrated dimensions and shape wherever possible. For diamonds, this includes whether the stone is round brilliant, oval, emerald cut, pear, marquise or another fancy shape. For coloured gems, disclose any characteristics that affect setting pressure, including cleavage, brittleness, treatments and variable girdle thickness.

Nominal dimensions alone are not always enough. A 6 mm round stone may vary slightly in girdle diameter and depth between suppliers. If the setting will be used for a specific parcel or a signature centre stone, supplying a representative stone or a fully dimensioned stone report reduces the chance of an ill-fitting seat. If the item is intended for calibrated stock, specify the permitted dimensional tolerance.

Ask to see the setting from top, side, underside and section views. The underside often reveals whether a stone can be cleaned, whether light can enter as intended, and whether the piece has adequate structure. For multi-part mounts, confirm how the parts will be assembled and whether solder joints will be concealed or deliberately featured.

For new designs, high-value stones or substantial production volumes, a physical sample is usually the prudent next step. A sample can expose issues that are less obvious on screen: perceived claw weight, balance, polish access, comfort and stone seating. Set realistic quantities, lead times and tolerances

Identifying those critical dimensions lets the manufacturer focus inspection where it matters most.
