For jewellery businesses, knowing how to verify metal hallmarks is not simply a matter of reading a number. It is a disciplined check of fineness, maker accountability, jurisdiction and the physical quality of the component itself.
A hallmark can support a supplier’s specification, but it should never be treated as the only proof of precious-metal content. Marks can be incomplete, worn, misread or, in the worst cases, applied deceptively. A reliable verification process combines close inspection with supplier documentation and, where the value or risk warrants it, independent testing.
What a Metal Hallmark Can Tell You
In trade usage, the term hallmark is often used broadly to describe any stamp indicating metal content. Strictly speaking, a full hallmarking system may include several marks: a fineness mark, a sponsor or maker’s mark, an assay office mark and sometimes a date letter. The exact combination depends on the country in which the item was made or assayed.
The fineness mark is usually the starting point. It expresses the proportion of precious metal in parts per thousand. For example, 750 indicates 750 parts gold per thousand, equivalent to 18 carat gold. A 925 mark indicates sterling silver, while 950 on a platinum component commonly denotes Pt950, or 95 per cent platinum.
Other common trade markings include 375 for 9 carat gold, 585 for 14 carat gold and 916 for 22 carat gold. A mark such as 14K may be understood in international commerce, but a numerical fineness mark is generally more precise for specifications, production records and cross-market purchasing.
A maker’s or sponsor’s mark identifies the business that accepts responsibility for placing the article into the market. This matters when a workshop needs to trace a finding back to its source, reconcile a batch discrepancy or investigate a quality concern. How to Verify Metal Hallmarks Before Purchase
Begin with the product specification rather than the stamp alone. The stated metal, fineness, weight, dimensions and construction should all align. A heavy-looking clasp offered at an implausibly low weight, for example, deserves further enquiry even if it carries a 750 mark.
Use a 10x jeweller’s loupe under clean, directional lighting. Examine the full mark, not just the fineness number. Look for crisp, proportionate characters placed in an appropriate area of the item. On rings, marks are often inside the shank. On chains and clasps, they may be near the trigger, end tag or connecting ring. Small findings can require a reduced or abbreviated mark because there is limited surface area, but the supplier should be able to explain the marking convention used.
Confirm that the mark corresponds with the alloy stated on the invoice and product listing. If an item is described as solid 18 carat yellow gold, 750 is consistent. If it is described as gold plated sterling silver, the base-metal mark may be 925 while plating information is provided separately. These are materially different products and should be recorded differently in purchasing and stock systems.
When inspecting the stamp, watch for uneven character depth, blurred outlines, unusual spacing or a mark positioned over visible polishing or soldering disturbance. None of these signs automatically proves a problem. Cast surfaces, very fine components and subsequent repair work can affect legibility. They do, however, justify a closer check before the item is accepted into stock or incorporated into a high-value piece.
Check the Mark Against the Correct Jurisdiction
Hallmark conventions are not universal. Australia does not operate a compulsory national hallmarking scheme equivalent to those used in some overseas markets. Australian jewellers commonly rely on accurate description, supplier declarations and recognised fineness markings, alongside testing where appropriate.
Imported goods may carry marks from the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, Asia or other manufacturing regions. A symbol that appears unfamiliar is not necessarily suspect. The practical question is whether it can be traced to a recognised marking system or identified manufacturer, and whether the supplier can provide a clear explanation of its meaning.
For trade buyers importing finished jewellery or findings, this distinction is commercially significant. Requirements for marking, descriptions and consumer representations may differ between the manufacturing country and the market in which you sell. Verify that your own product descriptions accurately state solid metal content, plating and any alloy treatments. Do not assume an overseas stamp alone resolves local compliance obligations.
Ask for Documentation That Supports the Stamp
A trusted supplier should be able to provide more than an image of a hallmark. For regular purchasing, request product specifications that identify the alloy and fineness, together with invoices that describe the precious-metal content clearly. For bespoke production, establish the approved metal specification in writing before manufacture begins.
For higher-value orders, batch traceability is particularly valuable. This may include weight records, alloy information, production batch references or independent assay documentation where available. The necessary level of evidence depends on the product. A small sterling silver jump ring does not require the same verification pathway as a platinum diamond setting or a substantial gold chain.

Use Testing When the Risk Justifies It
Visual hallmark checks are non-destructive, fast and useful, but they cannot confirm the full composition of an alloy. If the item is unmarked, the mark conflicts with the specification, or the order has meaningful financial exposure, test the metal.
X-ray fluorescence, commonly called XRF, is a preferred non-destructive option for many workshop and receiving environments. It provides a surface-level alloy reading quickly and can help distinguish gold, silver and platinum alloys from plated or base-metal items. Its limitation is equally important: XRF primarily reads the surface. Thick plating, solder seams and non-uniform construction can produce results that need expert interpretation.
Acid testing can offer a useful preliminary indication, particularly for gold, but it requires care and a suitable test area. It can mark the article and is less appropriate for finished, polished or customer-facing pieces. Density testing may assist with larger solid items, though hollow construction, stones and mixed-metal assemblies can make results misleading.
For a dispute, high-value acquisition or suspected fraud, seek testing from an appropriately qualified precious-metal refiner, assay service or laboratory. A destructive assay is not suitable for every article, but it remains the strongest route where definitive bulk composition is required.
Common Situations That Cause Confusion
Plated jewellery is one of the most frequent sources of misunderstanding. A 925 stamp on gold-coloured jewellery may correctly identify the sterling silver beneath the plating. It does not mean the piece is solid gold. Similarly, gold-filled and rolled-gold products have their own marking conventions and should not be described as solid gold findings.
Solder presents another consideration. A genuine gold or platinum component may contain solder with a different alloy composition at its joins. An XRF reading taken directly over that area may differ from the primary metal. Test more than one suitable location and interpret results in the context of the item’s construction.
Antique and repaired jewellery needs additional judgement. Older pieces may bear historic marks, foreign marks or marks partly removed through resizing and polishing. A new stamp added after repair can also indicate the repair metal, rather than the fineness of the entire article. Provenance, workmanship and professional testing become more valuable in these cases.
Build Hallmark Verification Into Receiving Procedures
The most effective approach is consistent rather than reactive. Set a receiving procedure for precious-metal stock: compare the delivery against the purchase order, inspect a representative sample under magnification, record fineness marks and weights where relevant, and quarantine discrepancies before components reach production.
Keep product photographs and supplier documentation with your batch records. For repeat lines, this creates a reference point when a future delivery appears different in colour, finish, weight or marking placement.
