For jewellery houses and independent workshops, the opportunity is significant. A well-executed custom ring can establish long-term client loyalty and demonstrate a brand’s point of difference. A client sketch is a starting point, not a manufacturing specification. Before CAD work or metal allocation begins, the brief should identify the centre stone’s exact dimensions and cut, the intended setting style, finger size, preferred profile, metal alloy, side stones, engraving requirements and target delivery date.
The centre stone should drive the design rather than be fitted into a generic mount after the fact. A round brilliant, oval, emerald cut and pear each create different demands around claw placement, gallery support and protection at vulnerable points. Fancy-shaped stones, particularly pears, marquises and radiant cuts, need careful consideration of exposed corners and points. Translate aesthetic language into measurable requirements

Delicate may refer to a narrow shank, fine claws or an open gallery, each with different structural limits. Low-set needs to account for wedding-band clearance, cleaning access and whether the stone’s pavilion can sit safely below the girdle line.
A strong production partner will raise these questions early. It is far more efficient to adjust a cathedral height or claw gauge in CAD than to correct a ring after stones have been set.
Metal selection is a performance decision
Precious metal choice shapes appearance, durability, fabrication method and margin. It should never be treated as colour alone.
Platinum Pt950 remains a preferred choice where naturally white colour, density and long-term wear are priorities. Its ductility can be advantageous for secure claws and fine setting work, although the required construction and finishing approach differ from gold. Platinum’s weight also affects the finished-piece cost, especially in substantial shanks or wide bands.
For yellow and rose gold designs, alloy selection influences both colour consistency and working characteristics. A warm yellow gold may suit a heritage-led aesthetic, while a paler alloy can provide a more contemporary appearance. White gold requires an informed discussion about the final finish, including rhodium plating where specified and the maintenance expectations that follow.
Metal integrity matters at every stage. Claw settings need enough metal at the base and tip to withstand finishing, setting and normal wear. Overly fine claws may look refined in a rendering but can leave little room for future servicing. This does not mean every ring should be heavy. It means material should be placed where it performs work. Designs intended to sit flush with a wedding band need particular attention. A low, integrated setting may create the desired profile but prevent another ring from fitting beside it. CAD and casting are highly effective for complex geometries, repeatable designs and designs with integrated galleries, halos or precise stone layouts. The quality of the result depends on more than the file. Shrinkage allowances, wall thickness, sprue strategy, casting conditions and post-cast finishing all affect the final piece.
Fabricated construction may suit certain classic solitaire forms, heavy bands and pieces that benefit from hand-built components. It can offer excellent control for experienced workshops, though labour requirements and repeatability need to be considered. A hybrid method is often the most practical answer: a cast shank or head combined with fabricated elements, prepared findings or hand-finished setting details.
For established retail programmes, semi-custom production can protect profitability. Use approvals to prevent costly interpretation errors

Where scale, stone fit or profile is critical, a physical resin model can be worth the additional step.
Before production proceeds, confirm the ring size, all stone measurements, metal and fineness, setting method, engraving text, surface finish and delivery expectation. If the client supplies the centre stone, establish who is responsible for its condition, insurance and any pre-existing damage before setting commences.
Change control is particularly important after CAD approval. A move from a 1.5-carat oval to a larger stone may require more than a resized head. It can alter centre of gravity, claw proportions, gallery height and shank strength. Treating that change as a simple substitution can compromise the finished ring.
Build quality control into each handover
Quality assurance is strongest when it is integrated throughout production rather than applied only at dispatch. Castings should be inspected for porosity, incomplete fill and surface defects before further labour is added. Components should be checked for correct alloy, dimensions and fit. Stone setting should be assessed under magnification for symmetry, secure seating and clean contact points.
Final inspection should consider more than polish. Confirm the ring size, metal stamp where applicable, setting security, claw alignment, surface finish, engraving accuracy and overall balance. The ring should be comfortable through the finger, free from sharp edges and presented in a condition that reflects the retailer’s own standards.
