A bespoke finding may be small, but it carries a great deal of responsibility. A clasp must close securely, a setting must hold its stone accurately, and an earring fitting must feel balanced in wear. Knowing how to order bespoke findings is therefore less about sending a reference image and more about creating a clear manufacturing brief that protects your design, production schedule and reputation.
For jewellery houses, workshop owners and trade buyers, custom components are often commissioned when a standard catalogue item cannot deliver the required proportion, functionality, metal quality or brand distinction. The strongest result comes from treating the process as a technical partnership from the outset.
Start with the job the finding must do
Before discussing shape or finish, define the finding's practical role. Is it a concealed clasp for a high-value bracelet? A pendant bail designed to accommodate a specific chain width? A halo setting that must be repeated across a collection? The use case informs the engineering.
A component intended for occasional wear may allow for a finer profile than one used in an everyday chain or hinged earring. Likewise, a finding designed for a lightweight fashion-led piece has different requirements from one supporting a substantial gemstone. Weight, movement, tension, wear points and assembly method all need consideration before production begins.

Build a precise bespoke findings brief

State whether the piece will be cast, fabricated, assembled from multiple parts or supplied ready for stone setting. If the finding needs a particular alloy for strength, colour matching or solder compatibility, make that requirement explicit.
Dimensions should cover more than overall length and width. For a clasp, specify the opening size, tongue thickness, catch mechanism and connection points. For a setting, provide the stone's calibrated measurements, girdle allowance, seat depth, claw position and preferred setting style. For earring components, clarify post diameter and length, back type, hinge direction and whether the pair must be left and right handed.
Where a component interfaces with another item, provide measurements for both. A bail is only successful if it passes over the intended chain. A jump ring must suit the link it joins. Specify the finish and visible standard
Finish requirements deserve the same attention as dimensions. Confirm whether surfaces are high polished, satin, brushed, textured, rhodium plated or left in a state suitable for further finishing. If the finding will sit beside an existing range, supply a physical sample or approved reference so colour, texture and proportion can be matched.
Tolerances should also be discussed early. Fine jewellery production involves acceptable manufacturing variation, particularly in cast components and hand-finished pieces. The key is agreeing on which measurements are critical. A minor variation on an unseen underside may be acceptable; a variation affecting stone fit, clasp action or symmetry is not.
Choose materials with supply confidence in mind
For professional buyers, bespoke manufacture is not simply a design decision. It is also a sourcing decision. The metal must be appropriate for the application and available with the quality assurance required for ongoing production.
Traceability, purity and consistency matter most when a custom finding becomes a repeat order. A prototype made in one batch of metal may look satisfactory, but the component needs to perform consistently when reordered months later, potentially in higher quantities. Confirm whether a CAD model is needed
A CAD model is usually the most efficient way to move from concept to a repeatable bespoke finding. It provides a controlled basis for checking dimensions, visual proportions and assembly points before metal is committed. For components with stone seats, mechanisms or mirrored parts, CAD is particularly valuable.
Supply an existing CAD file if one is available, but make sure it has been prepared for manufacture rather than presentation alone. Decorative renders do not always reveal wall thicknesses, undercuts, tolerances or polishing access. If the manufacturer is creating the CAD, review the model against the original brief and ask direct questions about any design changes proposed for production.
Approval should cover the details that affect the finished item: scale, orientation, connection points, stone fit, wall thickness and mechanism. Do not approve solely from a screen image if the piece needs to match an established collection. A wax, resin or metal sample may be the better decision where feel and proportion are central to the design.
Treat sampling as a quality-control stage
A sample is not a formality. It is the point at which design intent meets the realities of metal, workmanship and wear. Test the finding in the way it will be used. Open and close the clasp repeatedly. Thread the bail onto the nominated chain. Fit the stone or a calibrated substitute. Assess how the earring sits when assembled.
Examine the sample under normal workshop lighting as well as close inspection. Look for sharp edges, uneven polish, unwanted porosity, weak solder points, inconsistent symmetry and areas that will be difficult to clean or maintain. If the finding is designed to carry a hallmark, branding or internal reference, confirm its placement and legibility at this stage.

Agree on quantities, lead times and repeatability
Bespoke findings need commercial planning as well as technical approval. Request clear information on minimum order quantities, sample timing, production lead time, expected metal weight and any tooling or setup requirements. The most suitable quantity depends on the complexity of the component, the value of the metal and the expected demand for the finished jewellery.
It can be sensible to begin with a measured production run rather than committing immediately to a large quantity, especially for a new design. This allows you to validate workshop assembly, customer response and actual metal usage. However, very small runs may carry a higher unit cost, so the decision should be weighed against your margin and launch plan.
If the finding will become a core component, establish a repeat-order process. Retain approved CAD files, drawings, metal specifications, sample references and internal item codes. Record any approved production variation as well. Good documentation prevents a successful component being reinterpreted each time it is ordered.
Plan inspection before the order leaves the workshop
Your acceptance criteria should be agreed before manufacture, not after delivery. Identify the non-negotiables: correct metal and colour, dimensions at critical points, secure mechanisms, stone compatibility, finish quality and quantity.
